Rebecca Horn: Cosmic Maps

Charta, August 2008

Description

Published on the occasion of Rebecca Horn's third exhibition at Sean Kelly, Cosmic Maps provides a comprehensive survey of Horn's most recent paintings on paper. Included in this volume are sixty-two color images—many of which are full-page—along with a number of poems written by Horn. These poems do not confine the meanings of Horn's paintings, but rather compliment her provocative images of swirling pigment and explosive line.

The publication also includes an insightful essay by Doris van Drathen, who has contributed several critical texts on the artist in recent years. She argues that the works included in Cosmic Maps inaugurate a new visual intensity in Horn's oeuvre that functions at the level of the transcendental rather than the terrestrial. Tracing the relationship between these paintings and Horn's earlier works on paper, sculptures and performances, van Drathen shows us the transformational quality of this most recent body of work. If themes of the cosmic and the infinite were latent in Horn's past work, today they are fully articulated. These recent works uproot pictorial space from traditional distinctions between figure and ground and explore what van Drathen describes as "a single large animated space." The book is published by Edizioni Charta.
