The Blue Galleries at Boise State’s Center for the Visual Arts will host an exhibition featuring works by 63 contemporary visual artists with connections to New York City and Boise. The exhibition, titled Language of the Hand, includes individual works as well as the collaborative project Still Utopia/Broken Links.
Language of the Hand explores drawing as a primary and essential visual language, examining the hand as a tool for communication. It shows how we create meaning visually and non-verbally, considering the structured gestures of sign language, the mystical interpretations of palmistry and the many ways that mark-making can create meaning.
Drawing is considered the foundation for translating ideas into visible form. Through drawing, the hand becomes a primary instrument, forming an image that invites a personal dialogue between artist and viewer. This exhibition is a partnership between the DRAW Project (New York) and the Blue Galleries and was curated by the DRAW Project’s Brian Novatny and the Blue Galleries director Kirsten Furlong.
