Ludwig van Beethoven's works have repeatedly inspired painters, graphic artists and sculptors to create their own works. Especially in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century, a wide variety of approaches were developed. They range from the design of figurative representations to abstract colour compositions. Attempts have also been made to transfer individual pieces of music into images, and more recently rhythm and melody, dynamics and notation have been transferred into colour and form on the basis of computer-aided calculations.
With a selection of characteristic examples, the special exhibition provides an insight into the variety of ideas of visual artists whose aim is to visualise Beethoven's music.
