Performance artist Marina Abramovic wins Spanish arts prize

The gallery congratulates Marina Abramović on being awarded the 2021 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. The Princess of Asturias Foundation's mission contributes to extolling and promoting scientific, cultural, and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity and to consolidating the existing links between the Principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Crown of Spain.

Abramović’s oeuvre forms part of the lineage of performance art, incorporating a sensory and spiritual component. Imbued with a desire for permanent change, her work has brought a profoundly human essence to experimentation and the search for original languages. Abramović’s courage in her dedication to absolute art and her adherence to the avant-garde provide moving experiences that demand intense involvement on the part of the spectator and make her one of the most thrilling artists of our time.

“The life of an artist is not an easy task. It needs personal sacrifice, full dedication, and commitment to his/her work. The Princess of Asturias Award is a great honor and recognition in this moment of my life and career. I am emotionally touched, humbled, and proud to be the recipient of this prestigious award.” - Marina Abramović
