Antony Gormley has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Praemium Imperiale Prize in Sculpture. The Praemium Imperiale awards were created in 1988 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Japan Art Association and to honor its longtime honorary patron, Prince Takamatsu, who died in 1987. Awarded annually by the Japan Art Association, it is among the world's most prestigious distinctions for international achievement in the arts. The Praemium Imperiale Prize is awarded in five artistic disciplines: Sculpture, Painting, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film. The following artists join Antony Gormley in being awarded the 2013 Praemium Imperiale Prize: Michelangelo Pistoletto (Painting), Plácido Domingo (Music), Francis Ford Coppola (Film) and David Chipperfield (Architecture).
