Alec Soth's (b. 1969) iconic photo series Sleeping by the Mississippi will be shown at this year's Oslo Negativ.
The series was created through Soth's travels along the Mississippi River in the period 1999-2002.
The motifs move between portrait, landscape and interior, and the result is a depiction of an America where the everyday contains both vulnerability, longing and hope.
Since 2004, the series has been considered one of the most important in recent photographic history.
Alec Soth is known for an intuitive working method in which coincidences and encounters along the way play a central role.
Since the publication of his first book, Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Soth has published over 25 books and had more than 50 solo and major group exhibitions internationally. His work has been shown at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Media Space in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in Hayama, among others.
