Sean Kelly is delighted to announce that we will be participating in Frieze Masters for the first time this year with a stand (S4) presenting an important selection of historic early work by Joseph Kosuth. Frieze Masters, a unique art fair that presents a contemporary perspective on historical art, returns after a successful inaugural edition in 2012. Our stand will be in the Spotlight section of the fair, which is dedicated to solo artist presentations of work made in the 20th century. Spotlight is advised by curator Adriano Pedrosa. The fair will be open to the public from October 17 - 20, 2013.

Joseph Kosuth is one of the pioneers of Conceptual art, initiating language based works and appropriation strategies in the 1960s. Kosuth has described a work of art as "a kind of proposition presented within the context of art as a comment on art." The group of works on view at Frieze Masters clearly demonstrates this idea, focusing on the meaning and representation of numbers. The presentation includes early examples of his seminal dictionary definition works, such as 'Titled (Art as Idea as Idea)' [Number] (1968) and 'Titled (Art as Idea as Idea)' [One], [Two], [Three] (1966), with a neon work, 'Self-Defined-Five Colors' (1965), and 'One and Three Rulers' [O.E.D.] (1965). These extraordinarily important early works are key examples of Kosuth's practice and its exploration of the production and role of language and meaning within art.
