TEFAF New York
Stand 330
Park Avenue Armory, New York

VIP Day: Thursday, May 9, 2024
Public Days: May 10 - 14, 2024

Sean Kelly is delighted to participate in TEFAF New York presenting an exceptional selection of works by Joseph Beuys, Michaël Borremans, Antony Gormley, Candida Höfer, Idris Khan, Hugo McCloud, Sam Moyer, Gerhard Richter, Alec Soth, Kehinde Wiley and Wu Chi-Tsung.

Several featured works on our booth address the figure and presence and absence through diverse mediums and approaches, from Antony Gormley's important cast iron sculpture from 2000, which explores the relationship between the human body and its environment, to Candida Höfer's meticulously detailed photographs in which she illuminates the psychological impact of architecture, revealing portraits of vacant public spaces. Kehinde Wiley’s work on paper and bronze bust are among those in which he portrays the female figure in his ongoing reconciliation of the presence of black figures and their inclusion and/or absence in art history. Alec Soth's photograph from his series Sleeping by the Mississippi, captures people and places along the storied river, reflecting cultural shifts from north to south. Soth presents these images as a fragmented narrative, offering a unique visual record of America. Michaël Borreman’s mysterious and evocative figurative painting blends technical finesse with enigmatic subject matter, crafting an image that delves into universal themes with a contemporary complexity.

Idris Khan, Sam Moyer, and Wu Chi-Tsung push the boundaries of painting by employing unconventional materials and techniques, expanding the narrative possibilities within the medium. Khan’s new gesso on aluminum panel painting draws on diverse cultural sources, including literature, art, and music. His unique narrative, involving densely layered imagery, inhabits the space between abstraction and figuration. Sam Moyer examines traditional roles of painting and sculpture; her large-scale work reframes the painted surface as a sculptural field in which fragments of stone are paired with hand-painted canvas to create dynamic compositions. Wu Chi-Tsung’s Cyano-Collage replaces the traditional ink and brush method used in Chinese shan shui paintings – “mountain-water-pictures”—with experimental photography to reimagine the imagery of traditional landscape painting.

A salon style hanging features figurative and abstract works by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Hugo McCloud. McCloud’s flower series were initially begun as a daily meditative practice during the pandemic to document the passage of time. McCloud’s solo exhibition, As For Now opens at Sean Kelly, New York on Friday, May 10, 6-8pm.

Sean Kelly Gallery invites visitors to experience this diverse and compelling selection of contemporary art at TEFAF New York, where each work offers a unique perspective on the complexities of the human experience.
