Press Release

Charles Ede, Sean Kelly, and Gloria Cortina

TEFAF Maastricht 2024, Netherlands
Focus Booth 702

VIP Days: March 7 and 8, 2024
Public Days: March 9 – 14, 2024

Charles Ede and Sean Kelly are delighted to announce that in addition to each gallery’s individual booths at the 2024 edition of TEFAF Maastricht, they will collaborate on an innovative presentation for the new “Focus” section of the fair with renowned Mexican designer Gloria Cortina. This unparalleled multidisciplinary installation features a select group of rare ancient Greek vessels curated by Ede in colloquy with new paintings by Callum Innes and new sculptural furniture designed by Cortina.

Charles Ede, a prominent London-based antiquities dealer, will present a selection of ancient Greek red- and black-figure vases, which provide a historical context for the evolution of art and craftsmanship. The vases, through their form and decoration, engender a cross-temporal conversation with the contemporary elements of art and design.

Sean Kelly, an internationally recognized contemporary art gallery, invited Scottish artist Callum Innes to create new paintings that respond to both the ancient objects as well as the sculptural furniture designed by Gloria Cortina. Innes’ abstract paintings serve as a bridge between the ancient world and modern design.

"We are thrilled to present this unprecedented collaboration where the timeless elegance of ancient Greek vessels serves as the muse for a dynamic intersection of contemporary art and avant-garde design. The cross-disciplinary nature of the exhibition fosters a rich dialogue that spans centuries and disciplines", remarked Sean Kelly.

Mexico City-based designer Gloria Cortina, internationally acclaimed for her innovative conceptions that seamlessly combine traditional materials with modern aesthetics, has created new forms exclusively for this presentation. Cortina's refined and elegant designs are functional art pieces, complementing and enhancing the overarching narrative that intertwines the antiquities with the luminous quality of Innes’ paintings.

This partnership exemplifies the power of artistic discourse that transcends both temporal and stylistic categorizations. By uniting these diverse elements in one cohesive Gesamtkunstwerk, this immersive experience invites viewers to consider how ancient objects, contemporary art, and design can dynamically cohere in gorgeous aesthetic coexistence.

Our collaborative booth spans the breadth of art history and embodies the very spirit of the TEFAF Maastricht fair, widely regarded as the world’s premier fair for fine art, antiques, and design, bringing together 7,000 years of art history under one roof.
