Los Carpinteros: Conga Irreversible

at the XI Havana Biennial, Havana, Cuba

May 12 at 6pm, May 16 at 5pm and May 19 at 6pm

For the XI Havana Biennial, Los Carpinteros will stage an extraordinary new performance, Conga Irreversible, which will take place on three occasions: May 12 at 6pm, May 16 at 5pm and May 19 at 6pm. Conga Irreversible, a performance conceived, organized and directed by Los Carpinteros, inverts a traditional comparsa - the conga band and dancers that traditionally perform at Latin American carnival celebrations - through reversing all of the typical elements of the performance. In other words, the music, lyrics and dancers movements will all be performed backwards in a live event on Havana's Paseo del Prado, a location chosen by the artists for its historical and cultural significance in the city.

Conga Irreversible was developed in conjunction with director, choreographer and dancer Isaias Rigas, musician and composer Yosvany Terry, and renowned designer Abraham García. The performance features an original score that is to be played live as the dancers enact a choreography of a reverse comparsa in costumes that re-envision the traditionally bright outfits in tones of grey. Alongside Conga Irreversible, Pavel Giroud (film director and screenwriter) will create a film documenting the entire project and the three performances at the Biennial.
