Sean Kelly Gallery is pleased to welcome Argentinean-based artist LEANDRO ERLICH to the gallery and announce his upcoming exhibitions in the United States.
P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center will present
Swimming Pool, opening on October 19, 2008. In this installation, Erlich recreates a pool and removes its functionality. Viewers look down into the pool and witness a trompe l'œil effect in which they see what appear to be people submerged beneath the water. In reality, the people below have entered the empty pool basin through a side door. The installation will be on view in the Duplex gallery of P.S. 1 from October 19, 2008 until September 15, 2009. The museum is open from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday through Monday.

On October 20, 2008, Erlich will participate in Chanel Mobile Art, a traveling art exhibition housed in a pavilion designed by Zaha Hadid. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of the iconic Chanel quilted stitched-leather handbag, Fabrice Bousteau, curator of the exhibition and editor of
Beaux Arts magazine, invited a wide range of contemporary artists to explore this iconic handbag as the exhibition's starting point. Erlich's contribution to the exhibition is
The Sidewalk, an installation where visitors are invited to view a Parisian street – likely to be rue Cambon, an homage to Coco Chanel's former residence and first store – reflected in puddles of water. Chanel Mobile Art will be open in New York beginning on October 20, 2008, running through November 9, 2008. Admission is free, however it is advised to reserve tickets in advance.

Erlich was invited to participate in the premier of Prospect.1 New Orleans, a biennial showcasing 81 artists in 20 museums, art centers and public spaces around the city beginning on November 1, 2008. Included in the exhibition is a wide range of artists that are known on a local and national level, as well as those that have a broader international presence. The biennial is organized by Dan Cameron and aims to help reinvigorate the culture and economic activity of the city of New Orleans. Erlich will exhibit for the first time
Window and Ladder-Too Late for Help. The sculpture is a perplexing illusion, which includes a metal ladder on the ground, propped against a free-floating faux brick wall and window frame. The exhibition will remain on view from November 1, 2008 until January 18, 2009 and will have a number of public programs that will help benefit the city of New Orleans. Prospect.1 is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in most locations (hours may vary by venue).
